19th century Winter Solstice whiskey sells out in a day

Posted on: 13 Dec 2024

Boann Distillery's fourth Solstice Single Cask bottling, which revives a whiskey recipe first documented in 1892 during Irish Pot Still whiskey’s golden age, has sold out within hours of release.

The 270-bottle release brings to life the historic Vintage Mashbill 1, a recipe published in The Manufacture of Whisky and Plain Spirit by JA Nettleton, a leading figure on the science of distilling.

Boann’s Solstice releases have become a tradition, with the Meath distillery paying homage to its proximity to Newgrange by coinciding its whiskey releases with the Summer and Winter Solstices.  Distilled as part of the Vintage Mashbill project, a collaborative initiative led by Boann and whiskey historian Fionnán O’Connor to revive old Pot Still whiskey recipes, this Winter's single cask release comes on the fifth anniversary of the distillery laying down its first spirit in 2019.

“We reached back to the 19th century to recreate a spirit that reflects the golden age of Irish whiskey-making,” said Pat Cooney, founder of Boann Distillery.

“Crafted with 30 per cent malted barley, 60 per cent unmalted barley, and 10 per cent oats, it offers a bold departure from modern whiskey norms and embodies our mission to honour tradition while pushing the boundaries of contemporary distilling.”

Boann will host a special Winter Solstice event at its distillery on December 19, featuring a guided tasting of the Winter Solstice single cask release and Boann's Single Pot Still Irish Whiskeys; Marsala, Madeira and P.X., as well as insights into the Vintage Mashbill project.

Tickets for the tasting on December 19 are available now on Eventbrite.

Distilled and matured entirely at Boann Distillery, Winter Solstice Single Cask 2024 was aged in an Oloroso Sherry hogshead for nearly four years and bottled at cask strength, 61.3% ABV.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Rich and sweet notes of burnt toffee, treacle, raisins, and stone fruits meld with wood and campfire smoke.
  • Palate: Tobacco and leather lead to fruity zest, sherbet, plum jam, and dark fruits, with a hint of salinity.
  • Finish: A vibrant, spicy, and tannic conclusion, reflecting the smoky Oloroso cask’s influence.
