Porridge emerges as a consumer favourite as families reach for affordable comforting foods that they can enjoy together #PorridgePledge

Posted on: 05 Oct 2020

To celebrate National Porridge Week (4th-10th October) and as we head into Winter, Flahavan’s are inviting families across Ireland to take the Porridge Pledge, making a positive change to their daily breakfast routines and incorporating healthy wholesome porridge oats into their diets to start each day right.

Porridge has emerged as one of the nation’s most popular breakfast options through lockdown. Research carried out by Bord Bia highlighted that families now have more time to enjoy meals together (41%) and that 31% are choosing familiar favourite foods more often as a result of the lockdown (1).

Porridge oats remain a key affordable and nutritious staple in cupboards all around Ireland, with a marked increase in sales of large bag formats (+7%) as more and more people enjoy the goodness of porridge throughout the year as well as incorporating oats into their home-baking recipes (2).

Flahavan’s “Porridge Pledge” campaign, launched in celebration of National Porridge Week 2020, encourages people to re-assess the way they start each day and to choose a healthy nutritious breakfast choice. To help consumers get onboard, Flahavan’s have called in the help of some well-known faces and friends, to inspire consumers with their favourite oat-based recipes.

Karl Henry, fitness expert and TV personality, Derval O’Rourke former Olympian, Author and Coach and Galway-based yoga teachers Yoga Mara have all shared their simple, wholesome recipes containing natural oats as their key ingredient, giving them the energy boost they need each morning. Children’s feeding expert Louise Lennox encourages us to get the children onboard with tempting colourful fruity options, while TV chef, Eunice Power inspires us with an indulgent Organic Porridge recipe with zesty lemon curd for those lazy weekend mornings when we deserve a treat!

Louise Lennox says: “I love my porridge with a creamy, almost velvet texture. The secret to getting super creamy porridge is to cook it with whole milk in a saucepan on a low heat and to keep stirring it. My favourite flavour to add in is maple syrup.”

“Porridge and oats are an integral part of my morning routine” adds fitness expert and TV personality, Karl Henry, “They are affordable, full of goodness and fill me with energy for the day ahead. I love to steep mine overnight for maximum flavour too!”

“I always start my day with a bowl of porridge, and of course being from Co. Waterford it will always be Flahavan’s oats for me”, says Waterford-based TV chef Eunice Power,  “I try to keep it healthy and nutritious during the week but at the weekends I treat myself to something a little bit special such as my recipe for Organic Porridge with Lemon Curd”.

There are lots of ways to enjoy your oats this winter, safe in the knowledge that they are providing a nutritious breakfast that’s a good source of fibre, providing you with plenty of slow release oaty energy to keep you feeling fuller for longer.
