M&S Ireland has announced that it has achieved Origin Green certification, a significant milestone in its sustainability journey in Ireland. The certification recognises the retailer’s dedication to sustainable practices across its Irish supply chain.
Origin Green, led by Bord Bia, is Ireland’s national food and drink sustainability programme. It provides a framework for businesses to measure, monitor, and improve their sustainability performance. By joining Origin Green, M&S has committed to a five-year sustainability action plan, which will be independently verified annually.
Eddie Murphy, Country Director, M&S Ireland and Northern Ireland said: “We are thrilled to receive Origin Green certification. This achievement demonstrates one of many initiatives we are undertaking to do our part in helping Ireland meet its net zero targets. We look forward to working with Bord Bia and our Irish suppliers to drive our sustainability commitments forward.”
As part of this certification, M&S is proud to support local businesses. By partnering with suppliers, the retailer offers customers great quality products while contributing to a more sustainable future. This commitment is particularly evident during the festive season, as M&S showcases delicious Wexford yogurts from Killowen Farm and Irish handcrafted chocolate treats from Lir in Meath, adding a touch of local flavour to Christmas celebrations.
Eddie continued: “By collaborating with local suppliers like Killowen, Monaghan Mushrooms, Dairy Concepts, Milish Bakery and Lir, we are not only offering our customers delicious Irish products but also supporting our communities. This festive season, we invite our customers to join us in celebrating sustainability by choosing locally sourced food.”
Deirdre Ryan, Director of Sustainability and Quality Assurance, Origin Green said: “We are delighted to recognise M&S Ireland with Origin Green certification and welcome the business to the Origin Green programme. Since its inception over a decade ago, Origin Green has supported businesses and retailers in the food and drink industry to develop, implement and measure sustainability performance. We look forward to working with the M&S Ireland team to continue its sustainability journey.”
The receipt of the Origin Green certification is aligned with M&S’ global Plan A strategy and programme, which aims to make the business net zero by 2039/40. The retailer is actively working with suppliers to reduce carbon emissions, minimise waste, and promote ethical sourcing.
