Aldi Ireland today confirmed it will open a new €9 million store on Old Monivea Road, Ballybrit in Galway in Autumn 2023.
The fantastic news for Galway shoppers comes as Aldi was granted planning permission today from Galway City Council. 30 new permanent, well-paid jobs will be created when the store opens, while up to 50 jobs will be supported during the construction of the environmentally friendly store.
Featuring Aldi’s award-winning Project Fresh design, the new 1,254sqm store will be powered by 100% green electricity and will feature 52 solar panels on the roof, furthering Aldi’s strong sustainability credentials. There will be 80 customer parking spaces available in the dedicated basement car park, in addition to 12 bike parking spaces. Aldi will also be investing in the future of Ballybrit by providing four electric vehicle charging points outside the store.
The new store will have fantastic and streamlined access from the N6 for shoppers. Aldi aims to start construction in early 2022 on the unused site, which has lain vacant for the last 10 years.
Aldi has remained committed to its customers in the county for more than 20 years since opening its first store in Galway at West City Centre Retail Park in 2000. Not too far away, Aldi was recently granted permission by Galway City Council to expand its store at Galway Retail Park, Headford Road, which will be creating 10 new jobs in the locality.
Commenting, Colin Breslin, Aldi Regional Managing Director said: “This is great news for Aldi shoppers in Galway and the local vibrant economy, and we are delighted with Galway City Council’s decision. Since opening our first store in County Galway in 2000, we’re proud to be an established part of Galway’s retail landscape. We look forward to serving more Galway shoppers with our award-winning range of incredible value food and drink products, many of which are sourced locally from our Galway producers.”
Aldi’s state-of-the-art Old Monivea Road, Ballybrit store will be its 10th in County Galway. In 2020, Aldi sourced €28 million of locally produced food and drink from its Galway-based suppliers.
All of Aldi’s Galway stores are deeply involved in their local communities, having donated over 40,000 meals to local charities to date through Aldi’s partnership with FoodCloud. Each store is also part of Aldi’s Community Grants network, with MADRA Dog Rescue, East Galway & Midlands Cancer Support and Burren Animal Rescue some of the many local charities that have availed of the €500 bursary grant in recent years.
